Fire Safety DVD for the Disabled

Jubilee House DVD

A unique fire safety DVD which was produced for a disabled group in Folkestone was unveiled by the teenagers who helped to make it.

The students from Arc25 – a project for young people who’ve been excluded from school – produced the short film which will be used by disabled tenants who are supported by the KCC Jubilee House Independent Living Scheme.

Each DVD is personalised to a particular tenant with their name and photograph on it, and outlines what they should do in the event of a fire situation – either a false alarm or a real emergency.

The one-off project was conceived by Firefighter Justine Grant while she was working with Kent Fire and Rescue Service’s Community Fire Safety team. She said: “I wanted to get the youngsters involved in various fire-related projects but the idea of the DVD only happened after I held a standard fire safety talk at Jubilee House and I realised the messages weren’t getting across.

“A personalised DVD with detailed advice seemed an excellent approach and I’m delighted that the youngsters were so enthusiastic about helping our Audio Visual Manager Chris Newberry to produce it.”

Fiona Cabache from Arc25 said: “This was a great opportunity for the youngsters to get involved with their local community while picking up important information about fire safety.”

Residents at Jubilee House are supported by Kent County Council. KCC Cabinet Member for Adult Services Kevin Lynes said: “Jubilee House residents have many different disabilities ranging from blindness to special needs so they each need a different, individual approach to help them to absorb fire safety messages. I’d like to thank Justine, her colleagues at Kent Fire and Rescue Service and the youngsters from Arc25 for taking on such a fantastic project.”
