How old must I be to apply?
You must be aged 18 or over at the time of your application.
What are the working hours?
When you are posted to the Control Room you will work a 42-hour week in shifts. This means two days (0900H to 1800H), followed by two nights (1800H to 0900H), and then four days off. There may also be part-time positions available.
Where will I be based?
You will be based at the Fire and Rescue Service Headquarters, The Godlands, Straw Mill Hill, Tovil, Maidstone ME15 6XB
What salary can I expect?
The starting salary is £18,424 rising incrementally to £24,558 once satisfactory competence has been achieved, usually between three or four years' service.
What training will I receive?
The initial training is an intensive course lasting six weeks and is classroom based. Once you join a watch, your training will continue on-the-job until you achieve competence in your role.
Is there a pension scheme?
Yes – Personnel in the Control Room can contribute to the Local Government Pension Scheme where the rate of contribution is 6% of a Fire Control Operator's annual salary.
How much annual leave will I be entitled to?
Fire Control Operators are entitled to 30 days annual leave each year. You will also receive a paid holiday on, or in respect of, public holidays.
Will I have a uniform?
Yes - You will be provided with all the items of uniform and equipment that you need, but you will be expected to keep this in good condition.
Is it a very disciplined service?
There are certain rules and regulations you will need to follow. Most of these are there for health and safety reasons to protect you, but some relate to how you behave and conduct yourself in public.
