What does a Fire Control Operator do?

  • As a fire control operator, you will help to make Kent a safer place for everyone who lives, works and travels in the county.
  • You will respond to a range of emergency calls from rescue operations to burning buildings, from road traffic accidents to floods.  At times, you may need to support emergency callers who are in danger, by offering fire survival guidance.
  • You will extract essential information from emergency callers, recording their exact location and nature of the incident in order that suitable resources can be mobilised.
  • You will mobilise fire crews, officers and appropriate equipment to deal with the type of incident.
  • You will remain in contact with fire crews and officers at the incident via a radio scheme, acting as a central communication point between crews and other agencies, such as Police and Ambulance services.
  • You will contribute to the provision of specialised information to support emergency operations.
  • You will liaise with other agencies such as the Police, Ambulance, Coastguard, Environment Agency, Utility suppliers, Local Authorities, Meteorological office, in order to deal with the ongoing needs of an event.
  • You will record all actions on an incident log ensuring an accurate record of messages and information is maintained.
