The work of a firefighter
Do you want variety, challenge, job satisfaction and real career opportunities?
- As a firefighter you will help to make Kent a safer place for everyone who lives, works and travels in the county.
- You will be fully trained in a whole range of skills and techniques to ensure you are confident when carrying out the various roles of the modern firefighter.
- You will have a major role in helping to keep people safe by making people more aware of the risks of fire. Preventing fires saves thousands of lives every year and will bring you in direct contact with all sorts of people.
- You will respond to a range of emergencies from rescue operations to burning buildings, from road traffic accidents to floods.
There is no such thing as a typical day as a firefighter, but your work will include:
- Visiting local risk areas to talk to business proprietors or local people about fire safety, and preparation for any potential emergency. This could be an airport, industrial estate, residential area or coast guard.
- Carrying out home safety visits to talk to vulnerable people about fire safety – work that saves lives.
- Practising and developing the skills needed to deal with all sorts of situations and emergencies. Working as a team to ensure that you can always respond in an effective and professional manner, whatever happens.
- Using your technical knowledge and skills to maintain live-saving equipment needed on all fire stations.
- Responding to emergency calls at whatever time of the day or night they come.
Firefighters can also train to become drivers, learn to work with high-level appliances and promotion is open to all.
