Promotion and responsibility

Every firefighter is expected to be able to work on their own initiative, in an emergency you may have to take action and make decisions for yourself. You could be responsible for someone else's life or property at any stage in your career and you must be able to cope with the responsibility.
At an early stage in your career you will be given the opportunity to develop in order to gain promotion. At every level there are many jobs to be done.
  • You could help develop others at our own training centre. Firefighters undertake a lot of development training and therefore people who are good at passing on their knowledge are always needed.
  • The Service and its staff use a great deal of highly soecialised equipment. You could research and source new equipment for the Service as part of the operations team.
  • You could work in schools teaching children about fire safety, or work on initiatives to spread fire safety messages across Kent and Medway. This highly rewarding work has been proved to save lives.
  • You may also be involved in road safety initiatives.
  • The fire investigation team need a good eye for detail and a methodical approach to their work, but their knowledge of firefighting is essential.
  • Businesses and other organisations need advice to keep their staff and property safe. You could be part of the team that works closely with businesses to ensure the safety requirements are met.
These are just a few of the areas you could become involved with.
If you want to work towards promotion, support and training are there. The opportunities are there - all you have to do is grasp them.
