Serious incident in Westgate on Sea

Fire Investigators are looking into the cause of a serious blaze in Westgate-on-Sea in which a man died.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service received the 999 call to a care home in Canterbury Road just before 11pm yesterday evening and immediately sent two fire engines from Westgate and Margate.

At the scene crews were confronted with a well developed fire with people trapped inside and immediately called for support from stations in the nearby area. At the height of the blaze five fire engines and specialist support vehicles attended, Police and Ambulance staff were also called.

Eight firefighters wearing breathing apparatus were then sent into the building of three floors to search for casualties. 25 people were led to safety and paramedics attended to one casualty who was rescued by fire crews.

Firefighters fought the fire with a main jet, two hose reel jets and a hydrant and the fire was extinguished just after midnight.

The fire is not being treated as suspicious but the cause is being investigated
