Margate scenic railway fire – update

Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) is no longer at the scene of a vast fire that destroyed parts of a railway attraction at the disused Dreamland amusement park in Margate.

KFRS received the 999 call just before 5 pm yesterday evening. Once at the scene, crews were confronted with a well developed fire that engulfed parts of the seafront, and immediately called for support from fire stations on the East coast of Kent.

Crews worked hard to contain the fire which had spread to an adjacent building but sadly the Grade II scenic railway, which had not been operating for two years, was severely damaged by the blaze.

Firefighters extinguished the fire by 6.30 pm yesterday evening and the incident was scaled down to three appliances. Crews remained on scene throughout the night checking for possible hotspots and the last appliance left the site just after 1 am.

At its height, approximately 60 firefighters tackled the blaze along with 10 fire engines and two specialist aerial appliances.

KFRS Fire Investigation Officers and Kent Police are at the scene this morning gathering evidence to determine the cause of the fire.
