Fire crews recreate 'carnage' for learner drivers
Learner drivers are invited to attend a thought-provoking road safety workshop taking place at Faversham fire station next Wednesday evening (28 May 2008).
The event is being held as part of ‘Operation Car’n’age’ - Kent Fire and Rescue Service’s campaign to make Kent’s roads safer by encouraging young drivers and passengers to take road safety seriously.
Research shows that one in three young male drivers will write off their car in the first year of driving and a quarter of all convictions for causing death by dangerous driving are for drivers under 20 years old.
Fire crews from Faversham and Sittingbourne have joined forces with Kent Police Crash Investigation Unit to deliver a package of road safety workshops and live demonstrations targeted at new and learner drivers. The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) will also be talking about safe driving.
As well as sharing their personal experiences of attending road traffic collisions (RTCs), fire crews and police officers will use powerful video clips to show the serious impact of these incidents on families, friends and innocent people. Interactive discussions will highlight the dangers of driving at speed, while distracted or under the influence of drink and drugs.
To conclude, attendees will witness a mock ’crash’ demonstration and will get the chance to act as casualties cut free from vehicle wreckage.
Faversham fire station manager Dennis McCaughan said: “Cars can be lethal weapons and the aim of the evening is to encourage this very vulnerable group in our community to be aware of their responsibilities behind the wheel. We welcome the opportunity to work with our partners from Kent Police, South East Coast Ambulance Trust and the Driving Standards Agency to help reduce serious injury and tragic loss of life on Kent’s roads.”
