Preparing for Emergencies

Preparing for emergencies is at the very heart of our business and is something that KFRS is well rehearsed in. Working with other emergency services, local authorities and other key organisations that have a role to play in an emergency has also been an integral part of our planning process to ensure an understanding of each others role during a major incident.

The responsibility for preparing for emergencies within KFRS lies with the Emergency Planning and Contingency team who work from our Headquarters in Tovil, Maidstone, under the Director of Emergency Planning, Bill Welsh. We work with other departments and local agencies to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the people of Kent and Medway.

Emergency Planning is at the heart of the civil protection duty placed on Category 1 responders under the Civil Contingencies Act 2004|. The Act sets out to reinforce the existing emergency planning arrangements but with the introduction of six new statutory duties brings about new challenges to all those organisations to which the duties fall.
