Identify People at Risk

In the event of a fire in your workplace, the main priority is to evacuate everyone quickly and safely. The greatest danger is the spread of fire, the heat and smoke.

If you workplace does not provide suitable means of escape or an adequate means of alerting everyone in the event of a fire then people may become trapped, or overcome by heat and smoke before they can escape.

As part of your assessment you must identify who may be at risk if there is a fire, how they will be warned and how they will escape. To do this you need to identify where people will be working (including permanent and temporary workstations), the risk posed to other people in the workplace, such as customers, contractors, visitors, and where these people are likely to be found.

Identify how people in the above groups will:
  • be alerted to any fire in your workplace
  • make their escape
  • be accounted for at your assembly points
