Join our team as a retained firefighter

Retained Firefighters
Retained firefighters are paid to respond to emergencies from home or work. They are vital to the safety of the community.  If you want to do something worthwhile, exciting, challenging and rewarding...

About becoming a retained firefighter

If you would like to be a retained firefighter the first step is to contact your local retained fire station.
You will need to:
  • live no more than five minutes travelling distance from the station (however you choose to get there)
  • talk to the station manager about your availability to work for the service
  • get permission from any existing employer to allow you to become a retained firefighter.
If you meet these requirements, you will be invited to start the application process.

LearnDirect

You will be asked to go to a LearnDirect or other affiliated centre to complete a test of your reading, writing and maths skills. They can offer support and training to improve your skills as part of the application process.
If you pass the LearnDirect part of the process, you will be given details about the next part.
