We take a proactive approach to identifying age-related risk factors, to meet the needs of people of all ages in the community and to prevent age discrimination in the workplace.

The age profile of our staff shows that 572 (35 per cent) of our staff are between 35 and 45. The majority of our staff are operational firefighters and we have not recruited many new wholetime firefighters in recent years due to the reduction in the number of incidents attended.
We recognise that the staff profile is likely to get older - as we are recruiting less, turnover is very low and the age which people retire will increase.
Amongst our support staff, the profile is different with a third of staff between the ages of 45 and 55.
We have a well-used wellbeing section on the staff intranet that includes information on issues around mental health, fitness and diet.
We have signed up to the government's apprenticeship scheme to provide opportunities for young people.
We have a competency based selection process which ensures we do not discriminate on the basis of age. A trained human resources officer is involved in each stage of the recruitment process to ensure that our policy is followed.
