Firefighting operations are ongoing at a farm in Main Road, in Sellindge, Ashford, which is causing smoke to increase and decrease intermittently. 

As a precaution, people living or working in Sellindge and the surrounding area are still advised to keep windows and doors closed. 

The fire, which involved two barns and a large amount of hay, remains under control and crews are working to clear debris, breakdown the hay stack and dampen down any hot spots.

Two fire engines remain at the scene of a fire involving two barns and a large haystack at a farm off Main Road, in Sellindge, Ashford. 

At the height of the fire, which started on Wednesday (27 September), 14 fire engines and a bulk water carrier were in attendance. 

Crews worked hard to bring the fire under control and are continuing to clear debris and maintain a watching brief of the smouldering haystack to ensure it does not spread. Firefighters also worked with the farmer to move hundreds of cattle to safety. 

Fires of this nature can take some days to be fully extinguished and can cause smoke to increase and decrease as sections of the haystack are pulled away and dampened down. 

While firefighting operations continue, people living or working nearby are still advised to close windows and doors closed.

Firefighters continue to work at the scene of a farm fire off Main Road, in Sellindge, Ashford. 

Three fire engines and a bulk water carrier remain at the site, where a blaze involving two barns and a large haystack is under control. 

The technical rescue unit is also in attendance, and crews are working to remove debris while maintaining a watching brief of the burning haystack to ensure it doesn’t spread. 

The cause is not yet known.

The fire is under control and firefighters are continuing to dampen down hotspots.

Update at 7.30am on 28 September

Four fire engines and a bulk water carrier remain in attendance at the farm fire in Sellindge, Ashford.

Firefighters worked hard through the night to tackle the blaze, which involved two open sided barns, and a large haystack - which was approximately 200m x 10m x 10m in size. This morning, the haystack is burning out under controlled conditions.

Fires of this nature can take some time to be fully extinguished, as sections are pulled away from the pile and dampened down. Therefore, there is likely to be a fire service presence at the scene for days to come. 

One person with a minor burn has been checked over by SECAmb paramedics. 

An investigation into the cause of the fire will begin today.

Update at 1.30am on 28 September

Crews have successfully surrounded the fire involving agricultural barns and large haystack, on a farm in Main Road, Sellindge. The incident is being reduced to ten fire engines, a bulk water carrier, and a technical rescue team. KFRS' volunteer response team is also in attendance.

In the early stages of the incident, firefighters worked with the farmer to move a large number of cattle to safety.

Update at 11.40pm

Firefighters are working hard to bring a large barn fire in Main Road, Sellindge, under control. A bulk water carrier and 14 fire engines are currently in attendance.

Earlier advice for  people living nearby to keep windows and doors closed, remains in place.
