Kent Fire and Rescue Service was called to reports of a car alight on the hard shoulder of the M2, Londonbound, between junction 1 and 2.
Two fire engines attended, and crews wearing breathing apparatus, extinguished the fire using a hose reel jet.
Everyone was out of the vehicle on arrival, and there were no reported injuries.
Both lanes were temporarily closed, and duty of care was passed onto Kent Police and National Highways.
The cause is not yet known.
