In the community
In the past, we have not routinely monitored pregnancy and maternity figures as part of our diversity monitoring, but our firefighters will always seek to look after the needs of pregnant women and young children.
We are exploring how we can support the babyClear™ initiative to protect unborn children from the effects of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Our new community profiling and people impact assessment processes will help to improve the information we gather around pregnancy and maternity.
In the workplace
Looking after the welfare of pregnant members of staff is very important to us. We carry out risk assessments and make workplace adjustments in order to protect mothers-to-be and the unborn child. Our Maternity, Paternity and Adoption policy provides information and guidance for staff and their managers. Following consultation with staff who have had recent pregnancies, we are in the process of updating this policy to make further improvements to take account of their feedback.
Our equal opportunities policies and processes help us prevent discrimination in the workplace, and we have a range of flexible working arrangements which enable parents to combine work and family commitments.
