Statement re Horton Kirby Fire Station

Publication date
17 October 2013
News release text
Kent Fire and Rescue Service has been in contact with the local Parish Council and has told them that we expect Horton Kirby Fire Station to close next month.

Closure won’t be something that will happen on a single day, but we do expect it to be finally closed by the middle of November.

The decision to close Horton Kirby fire station was taken on 15 February 2012, by Members of the Kent and Medway Fire and Rescue Authority. The area served by Horton Kirby was geographically large, but the station was badly placed at the far north edge of the area it served and very near to Dartford station’s wholetime ground.

Following a countywide review that looked at over capacity and areas where there were gaps, it was decided that a new station was needed at Ash-cum-Ridley. South Darenth and Horton Kirby will be served by the two full time 24/7 fire engines from Dartford - which already cover this area when the Horton Kirby engine was not available. The new Ash-cum-Ridley station was never planned as a like for like replacement for the station at Horton Kirby.

No redundancies have been made and staff are transferring to other posts in the area.

KFRS are not planning any event to mark the closure of the station, but if the community want to mark the closure later in the year, when it does not interfere with operational use then we would be happy to consider that.

As with other parish councils across Kent and Medway, we will offer the local council the chance to buy the Horton Kirby fire station for community use.
