Kent fire crews support Child Safety Week

Publication date

News release text
Firefighters across Kent will be in action in their local communities next week to promote a number of key messages as part of Child Safety Week (24 – 30 June).

Child Safety Week is the Child Accident Prevention Trust’s flagship annual community education campaign, raising awareness of serious childhood accidents and how to prevent them, “without wrapping children in cotton wool”.*

Kent Fire and Rescue Service is supporting the campaign by visiting schools, colleges, community groups and events throughout the week to highlight important and potentially lethal issues around fire, water and road safety.

“The main topics being discussed with children and their parents include promoting fire safety in the home,” says Stuart Skilton, Head of Community Safety. “From planning an escape route to discussing the dangers of playing with matches and the possible penalties that can arise from deliberately starting fires as outdoor blazes are a major issue for us across the summer months and sadly, young people are often to blame.”

The crews will also be highlighting road safety to teenagers and raising awareness of the dangers of lakes and rivers as KFRS is called out to a number of water safety incidents each year. Stuart Skilton added: “Youngsters really don’t know what they’re dealing with as often the water is not as safe as it looks; it can be full of rubbish and debris, deeper than it appears and  extremely cold. We don’t want to spoil any fun but a bit of thought can mean the difference between a safe summer and tragedy.”
