Firefighters rescue man after smoke alarm sounds

News release text
Tunbridge Wells crews have rescued a man, believed to be in his 70’s, following a fire in his home during the early hours of this morning (18 June).

Two fire engines attended a property on Hungershall Park shortly after 2am when an open fire being used to heat the home spread to a nearby mantelpiece. A smoke alarm fitted by Kent Fire and Rescue Service in March alerted another resident who called the emergency services.

Firefighters quickly led the elderly resident, who is disabled, to safety, treating him for smoke inhalation before the arrival of paramedics.

Tunbridge Wells Watch Manager Iain Gross, who attended the incident, said: “When we arrived another resident was trying to help the man to safety but was having difficulty getting him out of his chair, by this stage the smoke had reached head height so the man was breathing in toxic fumes. We managed to get him out of the building and assisted with his care until the Ambulance Service arrived.

“Our Community Safety team had visited the property three months ago and fitted smoke alarms throughout the home, which without a doubt helped in alerting the residents to the fire. I would therefore encourage anyone who thinks they, or someone they know, would benefit from a free home safety visit to call us on 0800 923 7000 or email home@kent.fire-uk.org.”

The fire was tackled with a hose reel jet before checks were made throughout the property with a thermal imaging camera to ensure the fire had not spread any further. The man was given a precautionary check at the scene before being taken to hospital by ambulance.
