Operation focuses on town centre clean up

13 November 2015

Firefighters and West Kent Housing Association staff are joining up for a community clean-up day in Swanley on Tuesday, (17 November) as part of Community Impact Week (16-20 November).

The aim of the day is to encourage residents to dispose of unwanted household items such as furniture, carpet and unwanted rubbish to help spruce up the area to keep it clean, tidy and safe for residents and visitors.

Dartford Crew Manager, Richard Emery, said: "As well as being an eyesore, dumped furniture, car tyres, old mattresses, cardboard and other rubbish can attract arsonists and these types of fires can easily get out of control, spreading to nearby homes, sheds and other property.

"We're asking people not to be rubbish neighbours - don't dump it - contact your local district or borough council to ask about the disposal of unwanted furniture, or to report abandoned vehicles or fly-tipped waste (Clean Kent 24 - 0845 345 0210). If you witness fly-tipping please call 101, the Police non-emergency number and report it."

Kent Fire and Rescue Service's fire crews will also be giving advice on how to stay safe from fire in the home. Richard added: "Our advice is to keep your home environment rubbish free and to keep escape routes and doorways unblocked at all times. When throwing out rubbish make sure you store it sensibly so it does not present a fire risk while it awaits collection."

Firefighters will also be taking the opportunity to emphasise the importance of having working smoke alarms fitted in the home to allow early detection in case of fire.

The clean-up team will be visiting:

  • 8.30am – 9am Ellis Close (by first bin store)

  • 9.15am – 9.45am Damson Court (in car park)

  • 10am – 10.15am The Square (in car park off Rowan Road)
