30 April 2016

Firefighters got into the spirit of the Sweeps Festival in Rochester today (30 April) as they were on hand giving out vital information about chimney safety and that about now is the best time of year to have chimneys swept.

Crews from Medway and Rochester were also encouraging people to regularly test their smoke alarms - their 'Unsung Heroes'.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service's Community Safety Manager, Martin Skeet said: "The Sweeps Festival was such a great opportunity to talk to people about the importance of chimney safety. With so many chimney sweeps wandering around, it seemed too good an opportunity. We know how chimneys can turn into blazing furnaces when they catch fire, causing thousands of pounds worth of damage and putting your home, family and business at risk.

"Our crews were also able to encourage people with chimneys to register for our clean sweep alert system – it’s safe and easy-to-use and you can sign up in seconds. It will send you a message to remind you to get your chimney cleaned and inspected if you haven’t already had it done yet. That way you can make sure it's free from debris and in good working order before the autumn. This will help to prevent fires and structural damage to your property."
