Eastchurch teenager, Jordan Collard is appealing to others in his local community to think about joining Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) as an on-call firefighter.

The 19-year-old has lived in Eastchurch all his life and said; “The fire service has always been a big part of my life as my grandfather, Alan Burvill was and my dad, Dylan, still is an on-call firefighter at Eastchurch Fire Station.

“As a child I loved to visit the fire station and have grown up hearing stories about KFRS and how they help people. So when I found out Eastchurch was recruiting, I didn’t think twice. Being a big part of my community, helping to make it a better and safer place to live and work is a really great feeling and one I'd certainly recommend."

Jordan combines his day job as a scaffolder with being an on-call firefighter for KFRS. His employer is very supportive and has allowed him to take time off to complete the specialist training needed to prepare him for being on the front line to help people in his local community.

Jordan added: “Being an on-call firefighter has increased my confidence, given me a huge sense of pride and taught me a wide range of new skills - my friends are amazed at what I’ve achieved. It’s an exciting job and I get a huge adrenaline rush when my pager goes off, knowing that I could be fighting fires, rescuing people from road crashes or responding to a wide range of other emergency situations.

“I’ve also received immediate emergency care responder training, so can be called to certain medical emergencies such as cardiac arrests, chest pain incidents and people with breathing difficulties. It’s a great feeling being able to give something back to the community that has raised me.”

All sorts of people can be on-call firefighters and you could be just the person that KFRS is looking for if you are:
• at least 18 years old
• have a good all round level of fitness
• live or work within five minutes of Eastchurch Fire Station
• able to offer the hours we need to deal with the risk in the Eastchurch area.

You can get more information about joining KFRS as an on-call firefighter at Eastchurch or one of the other recruiting on-call stations and listen to people who are currently on-call firefighters answer some frequently asked questions about the role.
