Hundreds of families from Thanet and East Kent attended the newest and largest fun day dedicated to family safety on Saturday 9 July at Sainsbury's Westwood  Cross near Broadstairs.

‘Safer Thanet Day’ gave youngsters the chance to look around some of the vehicles used in emergencies and parents had the opportunity to speak to the teams responsible for keeping people safe.

The county's emergency services were in attendance alongside other organisations including:

  • Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS)

  • South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb)

  • SECAmb Hazardous Area Response Team (HART)

  • Coastguard

  • Kent Police

  • Margate Task Force

  • Kent County Council (KCC)

  • Ministry of Defence

  • Kent Search and Rescue

  • Army Cadets

  • Sea Cadets

  • Thanet District Council

  • British Red Cross

  • National Coast Watch

The event was co-ordinated by Kent Fire and Rescue Service with support from Sainsbury’s and family safety was at the heart of the day.

Margate's Red Watch manager Nick Salt said: "It was a real success with over two thousand people attend for a great family day out."

He added: "It was good to see all the emergency services and other organisations working together to put on a great display for our community. We had lots of really sensible questions relating to family safety and how parents can keep their homes and youngsters safe, so it was a really positive day from a fire prevention perspective."

There has been some very positive feedback with many visitors asking about next year’s event, some of the comments on Facebook included:

  • Stephanie Jade Whittaker said: "My boys had amazing day today thank you for putting on such a lovely event."

  • Tracey Todd said: "What a great atmosphere and all personnel very friendly and great with the kids , to allow them all to go in all the vehicles was a treat. Thanks for a great day."
