Chatham open day 2017

19 June 2017

Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) will be welcoming the public to the new Chatham fire station in Watling Street for its community safety open day this Saturday (24 June) and raising money for victims of the Grenfell Tower Fire and the Firefighters Charity.

The event, which is free, will run from 11am to 4pm and will include practical demonstrations by fire crews, as well as displays of the range of equipment that firefighters use at emergency incidents.

Visitors will get to see the crew in action carrying out a mock crash rescue demonstration and the community safety team will be on hand providing fire safety advice and showing the dangers of putting water on an oil pan fire.

Younger guests will also be able to have a go at squirting water from a fire hose and climb aboard a fire engine, while families will get the chance to spot the fire risks in a ‘hazard house’ display, before it is set alight at the end of the event to show how quickly a fire in the home can spread.

The day is aimed and providing essential safety advice to help keep people safe at home and on the roads.  Crews will explain the importance of having working smoke alarms and escape plans that everyone in the home knows.

There will be an array of both vintage and modern fire appliances, including a height vehicle, an all-terrain vehicle and a rescue boat.

People will be able to learn more about staying safe on the road and try out a seatbelt sled, as well as taking a look at KFRS’s modified car and fire bike display.

A range of other agencies will also be attending the event, including Kent Police, Guide Dogs (between 11am and 1pm) and the Involve Medway Group, with information and displays, as well as face painting and other activities.

Chatham watch manager Jim Ramsden said: “We are looking forward to welcoming all our community to our open day, which promises to be both fun and informative for all the family. We are expecting a large number of visitors, therefore ask people to bear in mind that the displays will be spread out throughout the day, so they may wish to plan their day to avoid the busiest periods.”
