A key priority of Kent Fire and Rescue Service is to reduce the number of accidental fires and related deaths and casualties. Whilst this can be achieved by delivering education and advice on how to prevent fire and reduce damage, and improving our operational response, it is the case that in some situations it is impossible to reduce the risk of fire occurring to a satisfactory level, especially in the homes of vulnerable people.
In order to address this fact we are committed to promoting the use sprinklers and are directing a large sum of Government funding to the installation of domestic sprinkler systems in high risk premises. The selection of the premises to have sprinkler systems installed will be against the criteria of those most vulnerable and at risk from fire; specifically those who are most likely to be unable to escape the premises unaided.
We are asking housing associations, registered social landlords and other residential business owners to identify any premises that they feel may meet the above description and invite them to apply to us to fund the installation of a sprinkler system in them. We will consider these applications and will apply further criteria to determine if the property and its occupants are suitable.
If the suitability of a property is confirmed by us, then, on receipt of a written quotation from a third party accredited installer we will fund the installation, which must be completed to meet the requirements of the relevant British Standard.
For further information on the funding available, please contact Chris Colgan, Chairman of the Sprinkler Working Group on (01622) 774500.
