Quick guide to being an on-call firefighter

We are currently recruiting for on-call firefighters at certain stations specified below.

We will have further vacancies over the coming months for on-call firefighters at other stations around the county in 2013, so please keep an eye on our website for details. This is a great job where you will provide vital service to your local community, learn skills and gain qualifications. We are looking for all kinds of people.

Anyone who meets our criteria can apply, and we welcome applications from all kinds of people. You could be someone looking for a complete change to their day job who wants an extra challenge, a mum or dad looking for work to suit childcare or someone working locally who needs extra shifts.

We pay on-call firefighters to be available for a set, contracted period (between a minimum of 30 and maximum of 60 hours each week). The hours we offer will be based on what the local station needs to deal with risk in your area.

During these hours you can go about your normal life at home, with your family etc, but if you get a call to say we need you, you must be able to drop what you are doing and be operationally ready within five minutes at the station.

Generally on-call firefighters have other jobs or family commitments, so this is not their ‘main’ employment. We will need to know what other jobs you do, you will need to tell your main (primary) employer, you need to consider rest periods and depending on your main job (eg drivers) there may be other issues to consider.

Is it the job for me?

  • Are you 18 years old at the time of applying for the role?
  • Are you physically fit?
  • Can you commit to the on-call hours we need from you?
  • Can you be operationally ready within five minutes of a station either from home or work location?
  • Are you committed to continuous training, sometimes outside of set hours, to become a competent on-call firefighter?
