Understanding people's needs and adopting a diverse approach and commitment to equality helps us to improve performance. The number of fires and serious road crashes has fallen over recent years and fewer people are dying or being injured as a result.
We measure performance in a number of ways. Firstly we measure outcomes, such as the number of fires we attend. We have seen improvement in all areas of performance over recent years.
We also ask people how well we performed when they have needed to use our emergency services. In 2010/11 the survey showed that when taking everything into account all respondents were satisfied with the overall service they received during and after an emergency incident.

The Disability Confident scheme aims to help employers to successfully employ and retain disabled people and those with health conditions. Being Disability Confident is a unique opportunity to lead the way in our community.
It was developed by employers and disabled people’s representatives to make it rigorous but easily accessible. The scheme is voluntary. There are three levels of assessment and each level must be completed before moving onto the next.
Kent Fire and Rescue Service is already committed to the recruitment and retention of disabled people.
As a Disability Confident Employer we:
- have undertaken and successfully completed the Disability Confident self-assessment
- are taking all of the core actions to be a Disability Confident employer
- are offering at least one activity to get the right people for our business and at least one activity to keep and develop our people.
Workplace Wellbeing Charter - Excellence Award
We are active in promoting health and wellbeing amongst our staff and have recently been awarded the Wellbeing Charter Excellence Standard - a national award overseen by Public Health England to recognise employers’ commitment to the health and wellbeing of their staff.

Local Government Equality Framework – Towards Excellence
As part of our commitment to continuous improvement in equality, we have already achieved Level 3 of the Equality Standard for Local Government and we were reaccredited with the ‘excellent’ standard of the Local Government Equality Framework in 2017.
