Do you really want to be a firefighter?

What do firefighters do?

The emphasis for us is prevention, this means our firefighters play an important role to help educate the community about the importance of fire safety. Therefore working with local communities and local businesses is a large part of a firefighter's job. Firefighters also deal with many other types of emergency: road/rail/air crashes, floods, chemical spills, or rescuing people and animals trapped in other circumstances. They also spend a lot of time training and doing routine activities. In fact, most firefighters probably only spend about 5% of their time dealing with fires.

The following list of questions has been designed to help you decide whether being a firefighter is really for you.

  • Are you interested in serving your community?
  • Are you 18 or over at the time of applying?
  • Do you enjoy working with people from different backgrounds and cultures?
  • Are you a team player?
  • Can you work under pressure?
  • Can you think on your feet and solve problems?

  • Do you have the sensitivity to deal with members of the public when they are distressed, confused, or being obstructive?

  • Can you take responsibility for representing the service when you are at work and when you are not?

  • Are you committed to always maintaining and developing your skills?

  • Can you take instruction from others?

  • Can you accept the need to keep to rules that tell you what you can and cannot wear?

  • Is regular exercise part of your everyday life?

  • Are you a practical person and able to use your own initiative?

  • Do you enjoy making things or finding out how things work?

  • Are you someone who can always be relied on to be somewhere on time?

  • Are you someone that others see as dependable?

  • Are you prepared to work outside in all types of weather and environments?

  • Does working at height or in enclosed spaces affect you?

If you answered no to, or are unsure about, any of the questions above, then you may want to think about whether being a firefighter is the right choice for you.
