Requirements to be a firefighter

To join Kent Fire and Rescue Service as a firefighter, applicants must be aged 18 years or over, meet the required health and physical fitness standards.

Being a firefighter is a physical job, however just as important are qualities like common sense, commitment and enthusiasm. You will need to demonstrate that you have the potential to carry out this challenging role through our recruitment process which includes:

  • Psychometric tests
  • Recruitment selection day which includes role related physical/fitness tests, and interviews
  • Medical assessment
  • Pre-employment checks and conditional job offer

As part of our assessment process, we will use the Kent Fire and Rescue Service behaviours to assess you.

Information on improving your fitness in preparation for the recruitment selection days can be found in the pages 'Fitness Training'. We strongly recommend you get advice from a qualified fitness professional before embarking on any focused training programme.
