Incident
House fire - Gravesend
Incident details
Kent Fire and Rescue Service was called to reports of a fire in a terraced private house in Empress Road, Gravesend at 12.45am on Wednesday 10 December 2014. Eleven calls were received by KFRS about this incident in total.

Two fire engines were sent at 12.46am and initial reports of the ground floor being well alight were quickly confirmed by the first fire engines on the scene at 12.58am, and firefighters wearing breathing apparatus began a search for persons reported to still be in the premises, with the fire now confirmed to be affecting the first floor too. By 1.09am, all reported persons, four adults and one infant, were accounted for and there were no reports of any injuries.

Crews worked to evacuate the adjoining properties to either side, leading residents to safety.

A third fire engine arrived at 1.25am to affect entry from the rear of the property, as the fire was confirmed to have spread to the property's roof space.

The incident commander requested a fourth fire engine and began tackling the fire as it spread into the adjoining roof spaces.

Crews have used four sets of breathing apparatus, two main jets, two hose reel jets and a water supply from a nearby hydrant, as well a 10.5 metre ladder to gain access to the upper floors of the property for firefighting.

By 2.36am, fire that had spread to adjoining properties' roof spaces was under control with salvage work complete, while the operation at the rear of the property continued with good progress being made.

Kent Police, electrical and gas safety engineers, a British Red Cross support vehicle and the local authority housing and building inspectors have been notified and are either in attendance or en route to the incident.

Firefighting operations continue and this incident report will be updated as more information becomes available.
