Scrubland destroyed by fire near Canterbury
Kent Fire and Rescue Service was called to a fire involving a large amount of scrubland near Canterbury. The blaze on Old Park behind the army barracks covered an area measuring around 3 hectares, or the equivalent of four football pitches. Crews used an all terrain vehicle to help support their firefighting by creating fire breaks. Tactics involved using hose reel jets, flexi packs and beaters. The scrubland was completely destroyed by the fire.
Firefighters renewed their appeal to the public to avoid starting camp fires and bonfires in woodland areas and to take extra care when disposing of cigarette ends to help prevent fires. If anyone spots a fire in the countryside, please report it as soon as possible, giving as much detail about the location as possible, so that it can be dealt with before it spreads. In addition, please report any information about illegal fire setting activities and those responsible to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
