An exciting fitness initiative to help families stay in shape is coming to Sittingbourne this month, led by local firefighter, Ben Corello.
On 13 July, the fire station on St Michaels Road will host a multi-agency Firefit day featuring displays and exercises designed to promote a healthy lifestyle. Ben, who has already successfully run the event at various places across the county, said: “To bring the event to my local community is great and I hope residents take the opportunity to come along to the station and pick up some helpful tips on improving their general fitness.”
The free event, running from 11am to 3pm will include a firefighter assault course, light hearted competitions, and the opportunity to test out the training equipment used by crews.
Other highlights include a free ‘health MOT’ and a chance to try out wearing firefighting equipment while rescuing a ‘casualty’.
Agencies involved on the day include the National Health Service, Swale Borough Council and Swallows leisure centre.
Firefighters will also be on hand to provide advice on staying safe this summer.
Head of Community Safety, Stuart Skilton, said: “Firefit involves firefighters using their role to lead and encourage communities through a variety of sporting and fitness initiatives. With events like this, we hope to inspire an improvement in health and wellbeing in collaboration with local communities and partner organisations.”
Swale Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Localism, Councillor Mike Whiting added: "Working with our partner agencies to get more people active, is one of Swale's priorities. Working in this way, shows how we are taking a positive step forward in how we are able to do this. Firefit is an excellent way to inspire healthy living and we hope that everyone enjoys this opportunity. We look forward to working with the Kent Fire and Rescue Service in the future to offer similar events across the Borough."
