News release text
Kent Fire and Rescue Service is reminding people to take care while walking in tidal areas after a woman was rescued after becoming stuck in mud near Rochester.

Crews were called to Upnor Beach at 8:44pm on Saturday night after a hiker walking along the shoreline became trapped shin deep in mud.

Firefighters wearing dry suits spent around half an hour freeing the woman, who did not require medical attention once released.

Strood Watch Manager, Martin Simmons, who attended the incident, said: “The area between Hoo Marina and Lower Upnor is a popular place for walking but due to the recent heavy rain has become hazardous without necessarily looking any different.

"We’re working with partner agencies to make visitors aware of the dangers, and I would encourage everyone to be extra careful and stick to tracks and solid ground. If you are out walking also ensure you have a mobile phone with you so if you do get into difficulty you can raise the alarm.”
