KFRS prepared for further flooding

Publication date
07 February 2014
News release text
Kent Fire and Rescue Service has been working with partners to prepare for potential further significant rainfall and high winds that are forecast to cause disruption to the county in the next few days.

Specialist KFRS equipment is on standby including boats with water rescue trained staff,  fire engines with additional flood response equipment crewed by firefighters trained in dealing with flooding emergencies, and four high volume pumps capable of pumping larger quantities of water.

Overnight, KFRS has been called to property flooding in Patrixbourne near Canterbury, Swanley and Paddock Wood, as well as rescuing a woman from a car in Hawkhurst. Staff have also assisted other agencies in evacuating some residents from the Little Venice caravan park in Yalding.

KFRS Assistant Director Sean Bone-Knell said: “We are ready to respond to the severe weather that is forecast but need the public to take sensible precautions. In particular to avoid driving or walking through floodwater as, over the past few weeks, we have been called out to many people trapped in their vehicles by floodwater.  We are working very closely with our emergency service and local council partners, including the Environment Agency, to ensure we provide the best possible response to the public affected by the weather. “

Advice for those dealing with flooding is available on the Environment Agency website at www.environment-agency.gov.uk/homeandleisure/floods and from Floodline on 0845 988 1188. Up-to-date information is also available on Twitter @EnvAgencySE and by following #floodaware.
