Yousef Al Ani, 29

Former qualitative market research manager

"I wanted to join KFRS for several reasons, the main reason being I wanted a career that makes a positive and meaningful contribution to society. After spending the first six years of my working life in marketing, I became demotivated and needed a complete change. I knew becoming a firefighter would be the ideal role for me, because helping people and the wider community is at the heart of everything a firefighter does. I also value the fact that as a firefighter, I must keep fit and active. Having spent much of my time in my previous job sat at a desk, this is something I’m really looking forward to."

George Felton

George Felton, 20

Former duty manager

"From a young age, I’ve wanted to join the fire and rescue service because of the positive contribution that it makes. I’m extremely happy to be achieving this goal. I’ve always been motivated by a strong sense of morality and helping others, which is an important part of the work done by KFRS. It’s also a career which allows me to expand my knowledge and skills, which I believe will stay with me for life. I grew up in Kent and KFRS allows me to give back to the community that made me who I am today."

Matt Sterry

Matt Sterry, 27

Former instructor - animal management

"Becoming a firefighter is something that I’ve wanted to do since I was a kid. I completed a firefighter cadet course in Southend when I was 14 and it was eye opening as to how the service operated, the duties of a firefighter, as well as giving me an appreciation of discipline and respect within the service. I loved every moment of the course and knew from then that I wanted to pursue a career in the fire service. The reputation of KFRS is second to none, and I saw it as a no-brainer to apply."

Shaunagh Brown, 27

Former commercial driver and current Rugby England player

"From the age of 17, I always wanted to be a firefighter. The lifestyle suits me perfectly with the variety of work and would allow me to train towards my sport so I could have both a professional career and a successful sporting career. I like the thought of being able to change perceptions of what women can do physically within the work place while saving lives. This reinforces the fact that there is a place for everyone and there is a place for different individuals to make a great and strong team."

Sam Hursey

Sam Hursey, 23

Former technician

"My lifelong aspiration has always been to become a wholetime firefighter and it was one of the proudest moments of my life when I received the call to tell me I’d been accepted into KFRS. Being part of the team that gives protection and help to people when they are most vulnerable and in need is such a great thing to be involved with. I want to leave at the end of my shift knowing I’ve given everything I can to help others and knowing that I am actually making an impact and difference to keeping the people of Kent safe."

Joshua Goldsmith

Josh Goldsmith, 25

Former financial advisor

"I’ve always held a strong belief that if you are in a position to do something that can help others and make a positive contribution to society, do it. Previous employment allowed me to work around the world and be in a position that was considered quite affluent. However, it missed what I think are the key ingredients to a successful career, pride and fulfilment. Knowing that every time I clock into work, I get an opportunity to contribute to my community and help make it a safer place, gives me everything that I could possibly ask for. I never got that throughout my career in financial services but since joining KFRS, I’ve felt it every single day."
