Maidstone

Jonathan Bell

Jonny Bell, 24

Former outdoor activities instructor

"I’ve wanted to join the fire service from a young age through the influence of my grandfather who was a firefighter in Belfast during The Troubles. He often spoke passionately about the job and his experiences within the service which made me determined to become a firefighter even if it meant moving away from home. I enjoy working as part of a close-knit team and am excited by the versatility of the fire service. I am very passionate about helping others, and in particular look forward to working with the community."

Marc Godfrey

Mark Godfrey, 26

Former security officer

"Simply put, I have a strong desire to help people and I think there’s no better place to achieve that than here. I was also an on-call firefighter for several years prior to my application and enjoyed every minute. I have known for a long time there is no other career for me. I love the excitement I get every time I hear the sirens wailing, and still get hairs standing up when it happens. I really enjoy the team bonds that are created in this organisation, and look forward to the lifetime bonds that are being created on the course as well as at our future fire stations."

Timon Gurr

Timon Gurr, 26

Former police officer

"I wanted to join KFRS as a firefighter because I wanted a job that would contribute to protecting and serving the community. No one wants to find themselves in a life-threatening situation, however it does happen and if I can do something to contribute to helping them then I think that’s a pretty awesome thing to do. I enjoy the fact that the job is active and engaging with each day and incident being different. I relish the challenge of working in stressful and emotive situations as part of a team but the fundamental fact is that I want to do a job that helps saves lives."

Tom Motum

Tom Motem, 29

Former sports and fitness manager

"I’ve always had a strong desire to make a difference to others in the work that I do. Becoming a firefighter has given me a huge sense of pride and purpose in what I will be doing on a daily basis to assist my community in times of need. From a young age I’ve always looked up to firefighters as some of the most well-respected members of any community and I’m proud at the age of 29 to now be a part of this exclusive family. I’m looking forward to the physical and mental challenges the role will inevitably bring and I’m excited to get started knowing no two working days will ever be the same again."

Welcome from Group Manager Karen Pointer, Mid Kent Group:

"It is a pleasure to welcome our new trainees who are now operational firefighters in Mid group and able to use their skills gained to help the people of Kent in their time of need.

This is the first time in over 10 years since we have had whole time trainees on operational fire stations. Feedback from their line managers is they are settling in well and are demonstrating all the right values, enthusiasm and technical knowledge as trainees.

"As a Mid group team we look forward to seeing them all develop into qualified firefighters and progressing their careers further."
