Keeping safe is important for us all. However it can become difficult to maintain safety for people with young children and in the later stages of pregnancy, especially if you’re a single parent family.

Everyday risks around the home can be more difficult to avoid with lots on your mind and looking after your children

Kent Fire and Rescue Service can help you feel Safe and Well by reducing risk in your home and supporting you with challenges you might experience. We all want you to stay safe in your home, and make memories with your youngsters for the right reasons.

How to prevent fires:

Smoking

  • Smoking is one of the main causes of fire in the home, and second hand smoke causes respiratory conditions in young children.

  • Always try to smoke outside of the home and extinguish safely.

Make sure you’re all plugged in safely

  • Electrical goods can lead to fire in the home – turn them off at the plug when not in use and follow manufacturer’s instructions

  • Make sure the whole family always use the correct chargers for phones, gadgets and e-cigarettes. Try not to leave them on charge overnight.

  • Do not overload sockets. Only one plug per socket is the rule.

  • Hair straighteners can stay hot for a long time so please make sure are not left on bedding or carpets.

Candles and heating 

  • Candles should be used in a safe holder, away from flammable materials, out of reach of children and always put them out when you leave the room or go to bed.Keep matches and lighters out of reach of children.
  • Use a fire guard to prevent sparks causing a fire or children getting burnt.

Kitchen 

  • Don’t leave cooking unattended, it’s easy to get distracted if you have young children.

Smoke alarms and escape plans 

  • Working smoke alarms are your best chance of survival if a fire breaks out in your home. Fit at least one on each floor of your home and test it weekly.
  • Make an escape plan that everyone understands – you can even make a game of it with the kids. If you have a baby or small child agree who is going to help them escape and how. Young children may not be woken up by a smoke alarm sounding.

Night time routines 

  • Close doors at night if you can, especially to the kitchen, to stop fire and smoke spreading and give your family the best chance to escape safely.
  • Avoid using any kitchen appliances overnight – like dishwashers, washing machines and tumble dryers – as tempting as this might be. Electrical faults can and do occur.

  • Try to avoid using them when you go out too.

What to do if a fire happens? 

Hopefully you will never experience a fire but it’s important to be prepared if the unthinkable happens.

  • Your best escape route is your normal way in and out of your home, but have an alternative in case you can’t get out that way.

  • Make sure you know where keys to doors and windows are kept.

  • Keep hallways and stairs clear so you won’t trip over in the dark or smoke.

  • If your escape route is blocked, it may be safer to stay put until help arrives. Get everyone into one room and close the door. Put bedding or towels along the bottom of the door to keep smoke out.

  • Don’t stop to collect belongings or pets – you can easily be overcome by smoke.

  • All of our fire engines now carry first aid kits to treat animals as well as people.

  • Smoke is a killer and tackling fires is a job best left to firefighters.

The most important thing: Get your whole family out safely, stay out and call 999

Other ways to keep your family safe

Carbon monoxide poisoning

  • Carbon monoxide is particularly harmful to unborn and new born babies.

  • Ensure gas appliances, fires and gas hobs are serviced and chimneys are swept regularly.

  • Ensure you have a working carbon monoxide detector.

Slips trips and falls

  • It’s difficult to keep homes tidy, especially with young children but it’s important to keep stairs and landing clutter free to avoid unnecessary trips – this is especially important if you are pregnant.

  • Make sure your home is secure by fitting locks, security lighting and alarms. Keep valuables out of sight. Report suspicious behaviour to the Police on 101
