Median Gender Pay Gap

The median gender pay gap is the difference between the middle hourly rate of pay for male and female employees. This measure can provide an indication of what a ‘typical’ situation looks like for example, what most people earn.

Median Male and Female hourly pay (2017-2021)
Years Median Male Hourly Pay Median Female Hourly Pay Median Gender Pay Gap Median Gender Pay Gap
2021 £16.04 £15.72 £0.32 2.0%
2020 £15.44 £15.30 £0.14 0.9%
2019 £15.41 £15.00 £0.41 2.7%
2018 £15.11 £14.71 £0.40 2.6%
2017 £14.96 £14.68 £0.28 1.9%

The median pay gap indicates that at the mid salary point of the service, male employees are paid 2% more than female employees. This equates to £0.32 an hour.

We considered this difference in more detail by comparing our on-call staff whose pay is variable with all staff whose pay is less so. While this did not provide us with a conclusive answer, we do however think that the distribution of males in on-call does draw down the difference.

Operational roles are paid in accordance with the Grey Book NJC agreed salary rates, this therefore ensures like pay for like work (equal pay).
