The following diagram illustrates the nine Protected Characteristics of age, disability, sex, gender reassignment, race, religion or belief, sexual orientation, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity.

Tips to maximise inclusiveness

  • Mindful communication: listen more, talk carefully.
  • Challenge stereotypes.
  • Avoid assumptions.
  • Ask yourself and others (the right) questions.
  • Be aware of your privileges.
  • Be proactive in educating yourself on the topic.
  • Stay open, stay curious, and do not fear mistakes.

An easy way to remember is to 'Think' - ask yourself is it: true, helpful, inclusive, necessary, kind? See the diagram opposite.
