A woman in her late 60s has been treated for smoke inhalation following a fire in her kitchen, which is believed to have been caused by a faulty electrical appliance. Firefighters say she had a lucky escape due to the home having no smoke alarms fitted. Kent Fire and Rescue Service sent two fire engines to the woman's home in St George's Avenue in Sheerness, when the crews arrived they found smoke coming from the front and rear of the property. Wearing breathing apparatus the firefighters entered the home and used hose reel jets to extinguish the fire. The firefighters made the property safe. It's thought the base unit of a steam iron developed a fault, which caused the fire. There were no other reported injuries. The incident is a reminder for everyone to have smoke alarms fitted in their homes - at least one per floor. Also of the importance to test them every week to make sure they work properly.
