Fire cadets is a successful programme that inspires the next generation to help create a safer future for Kent and Medway.
Together, our cadets develop their confidence through learning new and valuable life skills, meeting new people, being part of a team and most importantly, having fun!
The programme runs for 40 weeks - term time - and is offered to 13 to 17 year olds.
What is fire cadets?
Our cadets take part in fun and inclusive experiences, providing them with the opportunities to develop skills in leadership, resilience, socialising and confidence; all whilst learning new practical and transferable skills to build their future.
The course offers an exciting range of topics, contributing to achieving a National Fire Chiefs Council Fire Cadet Award, as well as enhancing their personal development, covering Level 1 water safety, CPR awareness and a greater understanding of what other emergency services offer.

Why should I join fire cadets?
Joining fire cadets offers young people a unique opportunity to improve their life skills and personal development. You will face challenges that help build communication, leadership, and collaboration skills that are valuable not only within the fire service but in everyday life. Working in a team, you will learn how to support one another, resolve conflicts, and achieve common goals - skills that are essential in any professional or personal setting.

We currently have fire cadets cohorts in these areas of Kent:
- Ramsgate - Monday evenings
- Rochester - Tuesday evenings
Fire cadets is held at Ramsgate fire station and Rochester fire station.

Does Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) run fire cadets?
Yes, we are currently running two successful cohorts with the hope of more in the future.
Where are your cadet units being run?
We are currently running cadets at Ramsgate and Rochester fire station.
What age do you have to be to attend fire cadets?
You have to be aged between 13-17 years old to start attending fire cadets.
How often does fire cadets run?
Fire cadets runs on a weekday evening, during term time only (40 weeks of the year)
Do I have to attend every week?
Due to learning something new every week, regular attendance is expected.
When I leave cadets, will I be offered employment at Kent Fire and Rescue Service?
There are always opportunities available here at KFRS. Whilst we can not guarantee employment upon the completion of your course, fire cadets will give you the skills and experience that will certainly help you with applications in the future.
How much does fire cadets cost?
We do not charge for fire cadets. When you enrol you will be supplied with a uniform to be worn during fire cadets. When you leave, the uniform will need to be returned to avoid any charge.
