Final update 

The fire is now out, and evacuated residents have returned to their properties.

The road will remain closed while repair works are carried out by the utility companies. 

Initial update

Kent Fire and Rescue Service is responding to a gas main alight in Canterbury Street, Gillingham. One fire engine at is the scene. 

Firefighters have put a cordon in place, and nearby homes have been evacuated as a precaution.

Kent Police, SGN, and UK Power Networks are also in attendance.
