Kent Fire and Rescue Service was called to reports of a roof and fences alight in Leicester Gardens, Sheerness.

Five fire engines and a height vehicle attended and crews used main jets, hose reel jets and fog spikes to extinguish the flames.

The fire is believed to have started from a disposable barbecue being put into a wheelie bin while still hot. It's thought the barbecue then ignited the contents of the bin and spread to nearby fences, which then caught fire to the property's roof.

There were no reported injuries.

If you're having a barbecue this summer, ensure you keep it on a steady, non-flammable surface, and keep it well away from property, trees, fences and garden furniture. Disposable barbecues retain heat for a long time and so they can also cause a fire long after being thrown away, so you should always triple check it has fully cooled before binning it.
