Latest Update: Corn field fire in West Malling

Update: 5pm 
 
Advice to residents to keep windows and doors closed near the A228 West Malling Bypass due to a nearby field fire has now been lifted. Attendance to the incident has been reduced to three fire engines and crews are damping down remaining pockets of fire and hotspots. There are no reported injuries and the cause of the fire is not yet known.

Attendance has now been reduced to four fire engines at a large corn field stubble fire near to the A228, West Malling Bypass. Advice to residents to keep windows and doors closed as a precaution due to smoke in the area.

Update: 3pm 
 
A fire involving a large area of cut corn stubble near the A228, West Malling, has been surrounded. Eight fire engines remain on the scene, using hose reel jets and beaters to extinguish multiple hotspots, with a bulk water carrier providing a water shuttle. Farm machinery is being used to create a fire break to help prevent the fire from spreading further and to break down some stacks of baled straw. There are no reported injuries. The cause of the fire is not yet known. Advice remains in place to people in the local area to keep windows and doors closed and to be aware of light smoke in the area of West Malling train station, which is expected to be clear shortly.

Update: 2.15pm 
 
Fire crews have increased their attendance to a large fire involving a cornfield, some hedgerows and farm buildings in West Malling, close to the A228 at Ashton Way. Eight fire engines are currently on the scene, along with a bulk water carrier. Local residents are being advised to keep windows and doors closed as a precaution. People are also being advised that there is smoke in the area of West Malling train station, which is expected to clear soon.

Firefighters are in attendance at a fire involving a cornfield in Ashton Way, A228, West Malling Bypass. Kent Fire and Rescue has received a number of calls to this incident and has four fire engines in attendance. Motorists are being warned to take extra care due to smoke travelling across the carriageway. Local residents are also advised to keep windows and doors closed as a precaution, while this incident is dealt with.
