Inspirational people honoured at KFRS awards

05 December 2025

More than 100 people have been recognised for their bravery, courage, and commitment to keeping Kent and Medway safe at Kent Fire and Rescue Service’s (KFRS) annual awards ceremony.

Firefighters, support teams, volunteers, and members of the public were praised for their outstanding courage and acts of kindness at Kent Fire and Rescue Service’s (KFRS) annual awards.

The ceremony, which was held last night (4 December), was a celebration of people who have gone above and beyond to help people in times of need, and an opportunity to recognise long service within KFRS.

Among the winners were Derek and Danny Brown, a father and son from Herne Bay, who helped to save their neighbour, Norman, when a fire broke out at his home.

Norman was unable to escape due to mobility restrictions caused by multiple sclerosis, so Derek and Danny acted quickly and entered the smoke-filled bungalow and, with help from other neighbours, carried Norman to safety.

Norman sadly died from other health complications a few weeks later, but his sister Jackie said she would be forever indebted to Derek, Danny and everyone who helped to save her brother.

She said: “Norman couldn’t believe people would risk their own lives to save his. Their selfless actions undoubtedly gave me more precious time with my brother, and I can never thank them enough for that.”

Other winners on the night included Dan Fiveash, who was on shift at ASDA Living in Maidstone when he leapt into the River Medway to save a man’s life.

KFRS Crew Manager Michael Cramer was one of the worthy recipients of The Chief Executive Award, in recognition of his support for ellenor children’s hospice.

Michael and the crew at Thames-side fire station, with support from other teams and agencies, helped to organise a mini open day for 24 children from the hospice, as well as their siblings. They also made medals and certificates to include in goodie bags for each of the children.

The awards celebrated bravery, excellence and long service.

And more than 50 people from across KFRS were presented with awards as a thank you for their dedication and long service.

Chief Executive Ann Millington said: “Every person who has been honoured at this year’s awards ceremony has shown compassion, kindness, and bravery to someone who really needed support at their time of need.

“They are all exceptional people, and I congratulate everyone who received an award. Thank you for everything you do to help keep Kent and Medway safe.”
