Lighting

It’s important to have good lighting throughout your home, particularly if you are an older person or suffer from dementia.

By ensuring you have good lighting:

  • you will be better able to find your way around
  • it can help you to feel safer
  • in the event of a fire, good lighting will help you to navigate your home

Good lighting is particularly important if you or someone you love suffers from dementia. Learn more on our Are you living with dementia pages.

Improve your lighting by

  • using higher wattage light bulbs
  • consider buying small plug-in night lights or stick-on battery-operated push lights for use in corridors and hallway
  • high visibility light switch covers can help you to find light switches more easily

Use lighting safely

  • check your lamps do not have frayed or damaged cables. (If they do, please have them replaced by a qualified electrician)
  • avoid putting electrical appliance cables under carpets, mats or rugs - walking over them wears the protective cable covering until bare wires are exposed, potentially causing a fire.
