Kent Fire and Rescue Service was called to a kitchen fire in Cerne Road, Gravesend.
Two fire engines attended, and crews, wearing breathing apparatus, used a hose reel jet to put the fire out. A high pressure fan was used to clear the home of smoke.
Firefighters rescued two cats from the property and provided both with oxygen therapy via specialist pet oxygen masks. There were no other reported injuries.
The fire is believed to have started accidentally, and has been linked to a faulty microwaveable heat pad that had been put in the kitchen bin.
Following this incident, firefighters are reminding residents to properly dispose of items such as heat pads, smoking materials, or ash from fire places and log burners.
