Kent Fire and Rescue Service was called to reports of a grass fire on the banks of the canal by Bridge Road, Sheerness.

Three fire engines attended and crews used ground monitors and main jets to extinguish the fire.

There are no reported injuries and the cause is believed to be accidental due to a discarded cigarette.

During these hot and dry summer months, remember:

  • Make sure cigarettes are fully out and cooled before being disposed of
  • Use a heavy ashtray that can’t easily tip over
  • If you have to smoke, do so outside the home to reduce fire risk
