Be seasonally safe this autumn and winter

06 October 2025

Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) is reminding everyone across the county to help keep themselves and their homes safe during the colder months.

Public, Seasonal safety

Residents in Kent and Medway can help to reduce the risk of an emergency this autumn and winter by taking simple precautions against fire, electrical and road hazards.

As the weather turns colder, people will be reaching for electric blankets and heaters or lighting their fireplace for the first time in months, but it’s best to check everything is in good working order.

Chris Redmond, Group Manager at Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS), said: “As the temperature outside continues to drop, we will all be thinking of ways to keep warm inside, but doing some safety checks in advance can make all the difference.

“We all want to enjoy the cosier seasons of the year but it’s important to do so safely and responsibly, so follow our simple tips to help protect you and your loved ones.”

To reduce the risk of an emergency at home this autumn and winter, remember to:

-    Check electrical blankets for any wear and tear, and if there’s any damage – don’t use it.
-    Keep electrical heaters away from anything flammable and switch them off when not in use.
-    Use battery-operated candles but if you’re lighting a real one, make sure they are positioned on solid, non-burnable surfaces and never left unattended while lit.
-    Have your chimney and flue swept before lighting a fire and have them maintained regularly.
-    And, have a working smoke alarm on each floor of your home and test them weekly.

It’s also important to stay safe outside, such as adapting your driving to match the conditions, not entering flood water and taking extra care when its icy.

And if you’re planning on having a bonfire, make sure it’s kept to a manageable size, well away from property or greenery, and never left unattended while burning.

Chris added: “It’s worth considering this time of year can be increasingly lonely for vulnerable and isolated people in our county, so if you can, make some time to check-in on elderly neighbours or someone you know who lives on their own, and make sure they’re safe and have everything they need. It could make a big difference to their wellbeing.”
