Be a safe and savvy shopper
24 November 2025
It’s the season for festive shopping and with sales already hitting high streets and online stores, Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) is urging everyone to shop safely, particularly when purchasing electrical gifts.
Public, Seasonal safety
The festive shopping season is in full swing with retailers offering discounts online and in stores but it’s important to shop safely to help protect you and your loved ones.
And with electrical items being at the top of many Christmas lists, Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) is urging everyone to be safe and savvy when shopping for devices and appliances.
KFRS Group Manager Joe Bathurst said: “Electrical gifts are a big part of Christmas but can be a risk if poor quality or not used properly.
“The safest way to shop for electrical goods is only purchasing from a reputable retailer and to check for safety markings, otherwise there’s a risk the items could be counterfeit, poor quality and not fit for purpose.
“And remember to avoid leaving devices charging overnight or when you’re out of the room.”
Firefighters are also reminding everyone to make sure electrical items are in good working order before use, and to always follow the manufacturer's instructions on using and charging the devices.
The advice comes after a spate of home-electrical fires across the county, including three taking place in Ashford alone over just four days.
On 16 November, crews extinguished a washing machine fire in Little Chart, which had caused extensive smoke damage through the property.
The following day, a hoover left charging caught alight, causing significant heat and smoke damage to a first-floor utility room.
And on 19 November, a laptop caught fire while left charging on a bed in a Kennington home, causing heat and smoke damage.
As each property had smoke alarms installed, the residents were alerted to the emergency and made their way outside before crews arrived and extinguished the fires.
Joe added: “If there’s an item everyone should have at the top of their list – it’s a working smoke alarm. Make sure you have enough smoke alarms in your home and check they are working or install new ones to keep you and your family safer this Christmas.”
