Kent Fire and Rescue Service was called to reports of a vehicle alight on the hard shoulder of the M2 between junction 3 and 4, near the Medway services.
Two fire engines attended, and crews wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the flames.
One person was passed into the care of SECAmb paramedics, and the cause is not yet known.
Kent Police and Highways Agency was also in attendance.
